J.D. Hays, Jr. is the senior attorney in Taylor King & Associates’ Northwest Arkansas office.

He is passionate about ensuring justice for all people, especially the vulnerable and oppressed. Whether battling an insurance company, a trucking company, a medical billing collection agency, or simply something more powerful than the common person, J.D. helps ensure justice for his clients through their right to jury trial.

J.D. has taken on corporate giants, litigated catastrophic injury cases, and secured closure with justice for families in wrongful death cases.  Every day he helps his clients navigate through complex insurance and medical industry systems.

Since joining the firm, J.D. has attained over $9 million in verdicts and settlements for his clients.

He spent the early years of his life as a missionary kid in Ethiopia, where his parents worked to provide clean drinking water systems to communities.  His family later moved to Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where he graduated high school, and later received degrees in Philosophy and Psychology from Ouachita Baptist University. After graduating from the University of Arkansas School of Law, he focused his practice exclusively on representing regular folks in cases against corporate or government interests.

J.D. co-founded the firm's litigation department in his first year at Taylor King & Associates. The following year he moved to Northwest Arkansas to open the firm’s first satellite office. Centrally located in Springdale, this office has since grown to support three attorneys and several staff. Taylor King & Associates now has three additional satellite offices based on this established model.

A trial lawyer at heart, J.D has litigated in over half of the 75 counties in Arkansas, and tried cases to a jury verdict in five different counties.

He is an active member of the Arkansas Trial Lawyers Association (ATLA), which awarded him “2013 Young Trial Lawyer of the Year”.  In 2014 he was named Chair of the association’s Membership Committee, and in 2015 he was appointed to serve on the ATLA Board of Governors.  In 2016 J.D. was selected to be one of three Arkansans to serve on the Board of Governors for the American Association for Justice (AAJ) - a national organization of over 20,000 trial lawyers from across the country.  He recently worked with ATLA to revamp the New Lawyers Network and he now serves on the inaugural executive committee as Chair. Also in 2016, the American Association for Justice selected J.D. for its Leadership Academy program. Sixty-four trial lawyers of all ages and experiences from across the country applied for the program and J.D. was among sixteen that were selected.

He is proud to be a graduate of the Trial Lawyers College. Founded by Gerry Spence over 20 years ago and situated on a ranch in Wyoming, the intensive three-week course allows the students to focus on bettering themselves as trial lawyers and as human beings.  It was a life-changing experience for J.D., and he has attended a one-week graduate course at the ranch every year since. Through the Trial Lawyers College he has met many courageous criminal defense attorneys and public defenders. He often travels across the country to help these friends prepare jury trials for innocent people charged with crimes.

J.D. strongly believes in sharing what he has learned with other trial lawyers. He has chaired over and presented at multiple seminars which provide continuing legal education credits and valuable trial skills to other attorneys representing regular people. He also works with The Focus Firm, a trial consulting company that helps lawyers develop their cases using innovative techniques and focus groups. Find out more at www.TheFocusFirm.com

You can probably find J.D. at the Arkansas State Capitol when the legislature is in session, where he fights for Arkansans’ constitutional protections - primarily the right to a jury trial in civil matters. He has also met with Arkansas's U.S. legislators in Washington D.C. about these issues.

He remains involved with his local community, speaking in schools about distracted driving, judging law student trial competitions, and helping coach a local high school mock trial team.

J.D. enjoys reading, fly fishing, film, and traveling.  He and his wife live in Bentonville, Arkansas with their two Bernese Mountain Dogs, Ace and Paisley.
